چکیده

We present a novel method for massively parallel hierarchical scene processing on the GPU, which is based on sequential decomposition of the given hierarchical algorithm into small functional blocks. The computation is organized using a specialized work pool in which different blocks of processing units solve different functional blocks. We present an application of the proposed approach to two methods used in ray tracing: construction of the bounding volume hierarchies and the recently introduced divideand-conquer ray tracing on the GPU. The results indicate that using our approach we achieve high utilization of the GPU even for complex hierarchical problems which pose a challenge for massive parallelization.

Massively Parallel Hierarchical Scene Processing with Applications in Rendering

We present a novel method for massively parallel hierarchical scene processing on the GPU, which is based on sequential decomposition of the given hierarchical algorithm into small functional blocks. The computation is fully managed by the GPU using a specialized task pool which facilitates synchronization and communication of processing units. We present two applications of the proposed approa...

Sampled and Analytic Rasterization

Hidden surfaces eliminated Sorting To enable visibility prefiltering, the visible parts of the projected scene primitives have to be determined exactly. We employ parallel hidden surface elimination for this task. The computations can be executed in parallel for all edges of the input triangles. This provides sufficient data parallelism to effectively use massively parallel hardware such as GPU...

Multi-GPU Image-based Visual Hull Rendering

Many virtual mirror and telepresence applications require novel viewpoint synthesis with little latency to user motion. Image-based visual hull (IBVH) rendering is capable of rendering arbitrary views from segmented images without an explicit intermediate data representation, such as a mesh or a voxel grid. By computing depth images directly from the silhouette images, it usually outperforms in...

Traffic Scene Analysis using Hierarchical Sparse Topical Coding

Analyzing motion patterns in traffic videos can be exploited directly to generate high-level descriptions of the video contents. Such descriptions may further be employed in different traffic applications such as traffic phase detection and abnormal event detection. One of the most recent and successful unsupervised methods for complex traffic scene analysis is based on topic models. In this pa...

Building a Million Particle System

Particle systems have long been recognized as an essential building block for detail-rich and lively visual environments. Current implementations can handle up to 10,000 particles in realtime simulations and are mostly limited by the transfer of particle data from the main processor to the graphics hardware (GPU) for rendering. This paper introduces a full GPU implementation of both the simulat...
